Smith Technologies offers an array of products and services to the energy and manufacturing industries. This business is carried out through operating units that include Smith Bits, Advanced Materials, and SII Neyrfor. The products of these operating units include drilling bits, turbines, polycrystalline diamonds, electric submersible pumps, elastomers and specialty welding. In the services area, Smith Technologies provides sophisticated well planning and drillstring analysis software to customers involved in drilling oil and gas wells.

Smith Bits is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of drill bits used for oil and gas exploration.

The Advanced Materials group includes MegaDiamond, MegaStir, Omni Seal, and Smith Lift. These operations manufacture polycrystalline diamond, provide specialty welding technology, sophisticated elastomer products, and submersible diaphragm pumps.

Smith Technologies’ SII-Neyrfor operation is the world leader in providing turbine drilling products (known as “turbodrills”). These tools are used in specific applications to enhance the performance of drill bits.

Products and Services

Drill Bits

Smith Tool is a world leader in the manufacture and sales of roller cone drilling bits. These bits have two major components, the body and the cones. The cones can contain either milled teeth or tungsten carbide inserts (TCI). The milled tooth bits have teeth machined into each of the cones, while the TCI bits have tungsten carbide inserts pressed into the cones. Certain bits have a polycrystalline diamond coating on the insert.

GeoDiamond is also a world leader in building and supplying diamond drill bits. These bits consist of a body made of either a matrix alloy or steel. The cutting structure consists of either polycrystalline diamond cutters which are braised into the bit or natural or synthetic diamonds which are impregnated in the bit.

Both Smith Tool and GeoDiamond carry on significant R & D programs to further enhance the performance of their bits through advances in engineering design, and materials research.

Polycrystalline Diamond

In addition to the polycrystalline diamond cutters used in drill bits, MegaDiamond also produces diamond cutting tools for various industries. These products are state of the art technology for the machine tools that use them as cutting instruments, providing increased productivity and cost savings over conventional carbide, natural diamond, and ceramic tools.

Turbodrills

SII Neyrfor is the world leader in the design, manufacturer and marketing of turbines used to drill oil and gas wells. These turbodrills are placed directly above the drill bit and use the hydraulic energy provided by the drilling fluid pumps on the rig floor to deliver torque to, and rotate, the drill bit. These proprietary tools are designed to provide faster rates of penetration, operate in much higher temperature formations, deliver longer downhole life, and produce better wellbore quality than conventional positive displacement drilling motors.

Specialty Welding

MegaStir, a part of the Advanced Materials group, provides high performance tools for friction stir welding and processing of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. MegaStir’s pioneering advancement of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tool technology gives them unique technical capabilities.

Specialty Elastomers

Omni Seals designs, manufactures, and markets specialty elastomers to the oilfield, irrigation, aerospace, and other industries. Their activities include compound development, mold design, material testing, prototyping, and part engineering. Omni Seals also bonds a variety of materials such as rubber to metal, and rubber to plastics or Teflon, and an assortment of other combinations.

Submersible Pumps

SmithLift manufactures high performance electric submersible pumps. These tools are able to handle a wide variety of fluids, and up to 2% sand, coal, fines, and H2S/CO2. These pumps use one third of the power required to drive a conventional pump, can handle higher volumes, and are extremely reliable.

Advanced Service Engineers

Smith Technologies has engineers located in oil and gas company offices around the world. These specialist Advanced Service Engineers work as a part to the operator’s drilling team to provide the best drill bit solutions for specific wells that the customer is planning to drill. These individuals are charged with providing unbiased recommendations to the customer, with the uncompromising goal of lowering the overall cost per foot to drill each well.

i-DRILL

i-DRILL™ 4-D modeling predicts a drilling system's performance and behavior using extreme computing power, finite element analysis and lab derived rock mechanics. Finally there is a unique approach that allows a complete drilling system analysis instead of the common practice used in the past of assuming bit effect factors. i-DRILL provides clients with the opportunity to eliminate the costly exercise of learning through trial and error.
